The new H.266 VVC codec promises 45% lower bitrate than H.265 HEVC tho sadly will require alot more encoding time.

It seems very exciting; any thoughts? I have no idea when or if it will be available for home encoders, but suspect it will one day be leaked via a torrent for us all to try.

At it's current state.. dead out of the water.

There is already an encoder for VVC (https://github.com/fraunhoferhhi/vvenc) but its unfathomably slow, proprietary nature (which hampers adoption), does not support Y4M input (for now), and no video player support. FFmpeg the so-called "A complete, cross-platform solution to record, convert and stream audio and video." refused to support VVenC due to its dubious licensing.

even x265 took years to fully evolved, and VCC x266 is a very new and still in development, so no chance to give it a try .

For those with powerful PC`s & wish to experiment; someone has made a fork of FFMPEG  that allows for both encoding and decoding of H.266 VVC.  https://www.github.com/yodadude2003/FFmpeg-VVC

How to play h.266 files

https://github.com/TencentCloud/O266player

*Reading the youtube comments seems encoding may take 200% longer than encoding H.265 but should yield superior video quality & much lower file sizes

x264 excellent for 720, 1080p, x265 excellent for 1080p, 4k, x266 excellent for 4k, 8k................. and so on. But yes you would need a serious rig with some serious soft/hardware installed to even consider changing from x265 encoding to x266 in the future "or not so future"

I`m happy to open this up for debate.

I see no reason for you to dissuade folks from experimenting with their SD, 720p,1080p content.

These sites + many more say:

"The H.266/VVC codec will deliver the same visual quality from SD right up to 8K"

https://www.pcmag.com/news/h266-codec-promises-to-reduce-video-file-sizes-by-half

"H.266/VVC provides efficient transmission and storage of all video resolutions from SD to HD up to 4K and 8K"

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/gadgets-news/new-h-266/vvc-codec-will-offer-faster-streaming-of-8k-or-4k-videos-on-mobile/articleshow/76847748.cms

I really hope to see new VVC H.266 torrents pop up on this site. I`m sure many wont be happy as they will complain about not being able to play this content. For them then they can just download a x264 copy. But for the majority of the users be it PC or MAC these new space saving video torrents are of great importance.

hevc x265 took about 5 years after it was launched to gain market share.

I don't know if today's hardware, with just a software update, would implement support for this and other codecs.
