PBS Iron Curtain: Living Under Soviet Occupation PDTV x265-MVGroup
In the aftermath of WWII, the countries of Eastern and Central Europe fell into the Soviet camp. How was the USSR able to control these nations? How did it transform the daily lives of its inhabitants to conform to the Soviet model? What resistance did it entail?
Chapter 1: The Hand of Moscow
In 1945, as his Red Army advanced towards Berlin to liberate Europe from Nazism, Stalin pursued another goal - to join the countries of Eastern Europe to his empire. In just a few years he succeeded in imposing the Soviet totalitarian model with an iron fist across Poland, Hungary, East Germany and Czechoslovakia. Citizens of those nations tell their stories of how their countries were occupied and transformed into communist states.
Chapter 2: The Reign of Stalin
In December 1949, Stalin's empire celebrated its leader's 70th birthday. Soviet domination of Eastern European countries was total and will remain so until the dictator's death in 1953.
Chapter 3: The Time of Rebellions
After Stalin's death, the countries of the Eastern Bloc hoped for the end of communist dictatorship. Revolts spread, but Moscow's grip was still strong and insurrections were brutally suppressed. The construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 - physically dividing the German capital - stifled any hope of change.
