Textbook in PDF format Recent years have witnessed rapid developments in uses of mechanochemistry to generate complex organic molecules, supramolecular assemblies, and metal-organic frameworks. Mechanochemistry, well known in the area of crystal engineering and polymorphism, is re-emerging as a technique for organic synthesis. Practical applications have been an important motivation throughout the history of mechanochemistry. It is used alone or in combination with other steps in an increasing number of technologies. Whilst the technique is not new, it is now evolving beyond simply being a solvent free alternative. Despite many synthetic transformations now reported, perhaps the most interesting transformations are those that exhibit different reactivity to conventional solution-based reactions. Specifically, the mechanochemical reaction involves highly reactive centers generated by the mechanical energy imparted to the reaction system. Mechanochemistry deals with stress-induced chemical reactions and structural changes of materials, and mechanochemical processes such as high-energy ball milling, vibromilling, pan milling and jet milling are typically used to prepare ultrafine metal, ceramic or polymer powders. The benefit of mechanochemical pulverization is the production of CNT/polymer composite powders which can then be processed using a number of melt processing techniques such as extrusion, injection molding, compression molding, and melt spraying. Chemical synthesis enabled or sustained by mechanical force, is undergoing an exciting period of rediscovery, enabled by new synthetic techniques and tools for real-time mechanistic studies. This Illustrated Handbook of Mechanochemistry highlights several aspects of this renaissance, especially the emergent synthetic advantages of Mechanochemistry, notably access to molecules and materials thought impossible to reach, and reactivity that is novel or difficult to achieve in solution. Illustrated Handbook of Mechanochemistry contains seven chapters. Chapter one presents introductory aspects of Mechanochemistry. Next, an emphasis is presented on polymer Mechanochemistry. Chapter three and four are mechanoluminescence and wear and friction analysis, respectively. Chapter five focuses on the phenomena considered in tribology are among the most fundamental and most common of those encountered by humans in interaction with their largely solid environment. Many manifestations of tribology are beneficial and, indeed, make modern life possible. Many other effects of tribology, however, constitute serious nuisances, and careful design is necessary to overcome the inconvenience arising from excessive friction or wear. Chapter six is about mechanochemistry-based technique for material damage detection. Chapter seven is mechanics of solids, concerned with the stressing, deformation, and failure of solid materials and structures. Mechanochemistry therefore complements the conventional methods of activation: heat, irradiation and electrochemistry. It is also related to tribochemistry, in which chemical reactions occur on the surface/boundary between different environments. Despite a recent resurgence in mechanochemistry, it remains far less well studied and understood in comparison to conventional methods of energy input.
