Jay Leno steps away from cars to feature something completely different and truly amazing: the Cirrus SR22T G7 Plus airplane. Jay's producer, David Swift, a pilot himself, told him about this plane, which boasts unique safety features not found in other aircraft. Jay is joined by Cirrus product directors Ivy and Seneca, who explain the groundbreaking technology.
The Self-Landing System:
The Cirrus SR22 is the first piston-driven engine plane to incorporate the Emergency Auto Land system, developed in partnership with Garmin.
The system, which can be engaged by a button or automatically, takes over control if the pilot is incapacitated or behaving erratically. It manages the autopilot, navigation, communication, and all engine controls, including the throttle and fuel pump.
The software intelligently determines the most appropriate airport based on weather, terrain, and altitude, then lands the plane and shuts down the engine. The plane even communicates with passengers using easy-to-understand screens, displaying a video of what's happening and instructing them to "remain calm".
CAPS (Parachute System):
Cirrus was founded on safety, and every plane comes standard with the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS). This system is used when something happens to the plane, such as an engine failure over inhospitable terrain, while the Auto Land system is for when something happens to the pilot.
The CAPS system has safely returned over 200 people (and a couple of dogs) back to their families since its introduction in 1999. Jay is blown away by the technology and the plane's top speed of nearly 250 miles per hour
