Release notes: *To mark the film's tenth anniversary, I decided to re-encode the DCP source. There are now two versions: a WCG version (2020 P3 LIMITED) and a standard SDR version (Rec. 709, Gamma 2.4).
The latter was generated via an automated ACES workflow with Reference Gamut Compression enabled and a simulated theatrical D60 white point (to prevent a shift toward cooler tones during the white point transformation from DCP to D65 - a phenomenon that can occur due to complex mathematical factors, even though D65 is relatively warm; feel free to look up this issue yourself). The conversion to 2020 P3 LIMITED was also performed using ACES with gamut compression to avoid clipping caused by RGB noise in a couple of scenes, given that the source content is strictly 100% DCI P3 and does not extend beyond that gamut.
In my view, these two versions offer the most accurate color reproduction; I managed to match the colors from the Italian BDMV release ((where the same master copy was used), even though the gamma differs slightly in my Rec.709 version.
In any case, this encoding is completely free of color clipping artifacts caused by the improper truncation of a wide color gamut, and the conversion itself is handled by automated tools based on widely accepted global color grading standards. In other words, there is no personal intervention on my part in the color grading process. I also applied filtering to correct chroma issues (artifacts resulting from 4:4:4 - 4:2:2 - 4:4:4 conversion), added very light noise reduction to enhance texture quality, and heavily optimized the HEVC encoding parameters for each version.*
Black and white areas are bt709 colors, color elements are areas located outside the bt709 matrix, DCi-P3 palette:
