1979, Lillian, Ohio, Stati Uniti d'America. Il vicesceriffo Jack Lamb e il suo figlio quattordicenne, Joe, assistono alla morte della madre Elizabeth, in un incidente sul lavoro. Jack, infuriato, incolpa il collega di Elizabeth, Louis Dainard, per l'incidente, in quanto alcolizzato. In seguito ad una sbornia, infatti, Louis aveva costretto Elizabeth a coprire il suo turno.
