▣ The ProRes master & the JPN 2025 BD release are the 4K remaster of this film, which is to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Shunji Iwai’s directorial debut, Love Letter. The 4K Remaster looks significantly better compared to the older masters, as it fixes the blown whites issue, which destroyed a lot of details on so many car & windows shots, and has significantly more consistent grain & PQ, and has some work on tints too. So, naturally, the 4K remaster version was chosen. So, for the 4K remaster version, it was available in JPN 2025 BD, ProRes Master & U-NEXT 4K WEB. The U-NEXT 4K WEB is highly compressed, and the JPN 2025 BD has grain & detail loss all over the movie, so naturally, the ProRes master was chosen as the source. The older master has a bit more scene and is a bit squeezed compared to the new 4K remaster. The ProRes Master only has I-frames. The 4:2:2 chroma source was converted to 4:2:0 for compatibility. A 10-bit encode was deemed unnecessary as the source did not significantly benefit from higher bit-depth compression.
▣ First of all, thanks to @milquesteak for the audio comparison parts, which made the work much easier. For the original stereo track, it was taken from the ProRes master, as it has more dynamic range & is the only track synced to the new master. The ProRes is similar to the 2002 DVD, but it sounds much better & as mentioned is synced to the new master. Also, it's not dual-mono. For the surround mix, there is a director interview where he describes the new surround mix .
For the 4K remaster, we’ve worked on parts that were hard to adjust in the original film, and the sound has been upgraded to 5.1ch digital surround—though the center channel still carries the original film’s audio. I’m truly excited to see Love Letter return to the big screen, and I hope you’ll experience it again in theaters, 30 years later.
- Shunji Iwai
There is something weird about the center channel audio in the surround mix. They swapped the center channel with the original Dolby surround center channel, but they rolled it off kinda poorly, so it does sound noticeably worse than the stereo. The JPN 2013 BD has noise bleed on the LFE channel & center channel, which is much filtered. Between the JPN 2025 & ProRes, both are pretty similar, but the JPN 2025 audio bit more filtered, so went with the ProRes track also for this one.
▣ English subtitle is OCR'd and spell-checked by @SIUUU. The Chinese (Simplified) subtitle was taken from @Seal encode, the Arabic subtitle was taken from @avistaz, the Romanian subtitle was by @gligac2002, the Russian subtitle was by @HPotter, & the Vietnamese subtitle was from @HDB. Both JPN 2025 and 2013 have similarly . Taken from the 2025 BD, and much thanks to @anko for the Japanese chapters translation. And, sync'd to scene-changes/closest I-frames. The QP file was used to ensure chapters on IDR frames.
▣ Repack Notes: After further checking, though it's still not confirmed, but from further comparison checking like circle objects, face shapes, mirrors, etc., the new 4K remaster has the AR stretched a bit tbh, here is the . Frame 126103 (bald man) in the new ProRes master, his head is noticeably wider and squatter. Frame 91812 (bicycle scene), the circular pipe/tube structures in the bike rack as a check — they look slightly more oval (horizontally) in the new master. I added some more reference comparison, but you can get the gist. The aspect ratio has been recalibrated based on the old Japanese Blu-ray (see the cropped CNZ figures): the image width is reduced from 1920×804 (2.40:1) to 1872×804 (2.35:1), bringing it closer to the old Japanese Blu-ray (thanks @xslidi). That encode was a great reference, and made the work easier. So, the stretched AR was fixed in this repack. Comparison with remux can be found .
