Tash should be at home with her five-month-old baby. Instead, she’s stranded in 1984 with her younger brother Jamie—and they may have just derailed the creation of the all-star supergroup Band Aid and its iconic charity single, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” When Tash and Jamie discover a strange homemade machine among their late grandfather’s abandoned garage projects, they assume it’s just another of his eccentric inventions. Then it throws them back to October 1984. Suddenly, they’re navigating cassette tapes, shoulder pads, Smash Hits and an alarming amount of indoor smoking. Jamie thinks it’s the greatest adventure of his life. Tash would simply like to get back to 2020—and to her baby—before anyone notices she has disappeared or she completely loses her mind. Putting pop history right would be difficult enough without the celebrity encounters, appalling disguises, sibling rows, buried family baggage and increasingly ridiculous plans. And as their escape becomes more complicated, Tash begins to fear that returning to the life she left behind may demand far more than either of them expected. Funny, nostalgic and full of emotional surprises, Do They Know It’s Christmas Yet? is a warm, witty comedy about family, grief, second chances—and discovering what really matters when life refuses to follow the plan.
