A House Through Time S06 (1080p, soft English subtitles)
A world of history within the walls of one house. David Olusoga brings the past to life, delving deep into the lost lives of everyday Britons - under the same roof, decades apart.
E01 The house's first residents are the Rev William Fitzsimmons, an 18th-century Episcopal Church minister who is arrested for helping French prisoners escape from Edinburgh Castle; Francis and Isabella Ronaldson, the former a post office worker who spied on Glasgow weavers to detect signs of radicalism; and the Steell family, including John, a skilled craftsman but terrible businessman, and his son John Steell Junior, who became one of Edinburgh's finest sculptors.
E02 In the Victorian era, the residents of the house on Calton Hill include Thomas Mains, a maker of expensive shoes whose customers won’t pay. His wife, Ann, eventually takes the customers to court after his death. There's also Thomas Glen, a world-famous bagpipe maker who runs a musical instrument shop in the city, early photographer Archibald Burns, and a notorious brothel keeper, the mysterious Catherine Johnston.
E03 During the first two decades of the 20th century, life for many in Edinburgh is hard. The demolition of the slums in the Old Town has put pressure on living spaces, and the house on Calton Hill has been subdivided to accommodate more families. Featured are the Marshalls, a family of five occupying just two rooms and sharing the floor and toilet with another family; the Ross family, including head prison warder James, who is brutally attacked by an inmate; and Annie Anthony and her son John, a professional soldier who fought a very different sort of war.
E04 David follows the house from the poverty-stricken 1930s, through the Second World War and the cultural renaissance of postwar Edinburgh, all the way to the present day.
The episodes follows the Ruggs, who were witnesses to the first German attack on mainland Britain, in October 1939; the Shiels family, whose grandchildren show David a treasure trove of family letters and recall the destruction of the nearby slums; architect Alex Brown, who bought number 22 out of disbelief that the beautiful Georgian house could be threatened; and banjo player JJ Jamieson, who was attached to the city's cultural vibrancy. Finally, David invites present day residents Morag and Henrietta to hear about their predecessors in the house. Who will win the bet about how the house was originally built, and what will Henrietta make of number 20 once being run as a brothel?
