Yiulia lives with her farmer parents in a colony of Ukrainian descent. The girl dreams of having her first birthday party with a decorated cake, but the family traditionally don't celebrate birthdays and is also going through financial difficulties. One of her mother's cousins dies the week of her birthday. Yiulia must learn to deal with grief, face the fear of death, which in her mind wears purple, and fight to accomplish her goal.
